|£18million sports centre redevelopment planned for Queen's Park residents|
(Article in Brilliant Brent) Queen's Park residents could soon be receiving a new £18 million sports centre at no cost to the taxpayer, Westminster Council has announced.
The council has unveiled proposals to create a new improved sports centre by merging the existing Jubilee and Moberly Sports Centres. Jubilee Sports Centre is located in Westminster and Moberly is in The Quadrant, Kilburn Lane, on the Westminster border with Brent.
Subject to planning permission, the new centre will include more facilities than both Jubilee and Moberly combined, including a new swimming pool and dedicated learner pool, an eight-court sports hall, health and fitness suite, exercise and dance studios, a multi-use gymnastics and martial arts area and new boxing provision.
Facilities for community group use will also be provided on site; the centre will be operated as a public pay as you play facility.
The redevelopment costs will be funded by the sale of new residential properties at both sites.
Councillor James Powney, Brent Council's Lead Member for Environment and Neighbourhoods, said: "I am delighted to see such a big investment in a sports centre in Brent. We know our residents would especially welcome a new swimming pool, but the other facilities will also be a great enhancement to the borough."
Jubilee Sports Centre will remain fully open whilst the Moberly site is being redeveloped; Jubilee is expected to close in May 2014 and all users and activities will then move into the new Moberly centre.
Residents can find out more about the proposals by attending a drop-in session at Moberly Sports Centre on 16 April from 12.30 - 2pm and 6.30 - 8pm.
